Professor Jonathan M. Gershoni was awarded a BSc in Biology and PhD in Biochemistry from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, after which, he did post-doctoral training at Yale School of Medicine under Professor George E Palade. There he began studying the interplay of viruses, their targets, and immune system defense mechanisms. After this research, he joined the Department of Biophysics at the Weizmann Institute of Science where he continued his work on biotechnology and how to confront viruses. Moreover, he joined the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD with Dr. Robert C Gallo to develop new AIDS therapy and prevention methods. Then, returned to Israel in 1990, he founded among others, a new Department of Cell Research and Immunology at Tel Aviv University where he served as chairman from 2003-2006. For the last 3 decades, Professor Gershoni has focused studies on pandemic diseases such as AIDS, Hepatitis C, Influenza, SARS, and now COVID-19. With his recently confirmed US patent on technology that could lead to a functional vaccine for COVID-19, we very much look forward to seeing what comes next in his career and welcome him to speak on the global viral threat at hand.
